As a career educator, I grew tired working in a broken education system. 21st-century learners are being educated by 20th-century educators, using a 19th-century curriculum. Last year, after 18 years of teaching in the traditional classroom, I shifted my focus over to improving the education of those who choose to learn from home.
In building an effective distance learning program – particularly one approved by Google Education Suite – I searched the globe to find experienced teachers who are just as passionate as I am about forward-thinking curriculum. Our program also prioritizes student mental health, digital citizenship, and diversity to balance our project-based learning approach (replacing standardized testing). We offer over 60 elective courses, all accessible on-demand.
An additional layer of connection is available through collaborative research projects between students. Currently, we have international students in five countries. By connecting these students, it allows for meaningful socialization during this time of school shutdowns and isolation. Students also enjoy choosing their projects while parents appreciate having a voice in what they are learning.
Whether you are going to continue to use distance learning in the fall, or have long term goals for your child(ren) to be educated at home, The Distance School offers the academic experience than you have been looking for.
